gavethreeImperialCorpscommanders-LuZhi,HuangfuSong,
andZhuJun-commandofthreeelitefieldarmieswithordersto
bringtherebelstojustice.
AsforZhangJue'sarmy,itbeganadvancingonYouzhou
district.Thegovernor,LiuYan,wasanativeofJinglingcountyin
JiangxiaandadescendantofPrinceGongofLuoftheimperial
clan.Threatenedbytheapproachingrebels,LiuYansummoned
CommandantZouJingforhisestimateofthesituation."Theyare
many,"saidJing,"andwearefew.Thebestcourse,YourLordship,
istorecruitanarmyquicklytodealwiththeenemy."Thegovernor
agreedandissuedacallforvolunteersloyaltothethrone.
ThecallwaspostedinZhuocounty,whereitdrewtheattention
ofamanofheroicmettle.Thisman,thoughnoscholar,wasgentle
andgenerousbynature,taciturnandreserved.Hisoneambition
wastocultivatethefriendshipottheboldestspiritsoftheempire.
Hestoodsevenandahalfspanstall,witharmsthatreachedbelow
hisknees.Hisearlobeswereelongated,hiseyeswidelysetandable
toseehisownears.Hisfacewasflawlessasjade,andhislipslike
dabsofrouge.
ThismanwasadescendantofLiuSheng,PrinceJingot
Zhongshan,agreat-great-grandsonofthefourthHanemperor,
Jing.HisnamewasLiuBei;hisstyle,Xuande.14Generations
before,duringthereignofEmperorWu,LiuSheng'sson,Zhen,
wasmadelordofZhuoluprecinct,butthefiefandtitlewerelater
forfeitedwhenZhenwasaccusedofmakinganunsatisfactory
offeringattheeighth-monthlibationintheEmperor'sancestral
temple.15ThusabranchoftheLiufamilycametosettleinZhuo
county.
Xuande'sgrandfatherwasLiuXiong;hisfather,LiuHong.
LocalauthoritieshadrecommendedHongtothecourtforhisfilial
devotionandpersonalintegrity.16Hereceivedappointmentand
actuallyheldaminoroffice;buthediedyoung.Orphaned,Xuande
servedhiswidowedmotherwithunstintingaffection.However,
theyhadbeenleftsopoorthathehadtosellsandalsandweave
matstolive.
ThefamilyresidedinacountyhamletcalledTwo-StoryMulber-
ryafteratreeofsomefiftyspansjustsoutheastoftheirhome.Seen
fromafar,themulberryrosetallandspreadbroadlylikeacarnage
canopy."Aneminentmanwillcomefromthishouse,"afortune-
telleroncepredicted.Whileplayingbeneaththetreewiththeboys
inthehamlet,youngXuandeoftenboasted,"WhenI'mtheSon
ofHeaven,mychariotwillhaveacanopylikethis."Impressedby
thesewords,hisuncleLiuYuanqiremarked,"Thisisnoordinary
child."17Yuanqisympathizedwiththeimpoverishedfamilyand
oftenhelpedouthisnephew.AtfifteenXuandewassentawayb'y
hismothertostudy,andZhengXuanandLuZhiwereamonghis
teachers.18HealsoformedaclosefriendshipwithGongsunZan.
Xuandewastwenty-eightwhenGovernorLiuissuedhiscallfor
volunteers.ReadingthenoticeinZhuothatday,Xuandesighed
heavily."Whysuchlongsighs?"someonebehindhimasked
brusquely."Arealmanshouldbeservinghisemperorinthehour
ofperil."Xuandeturnedandfacedamaneightspanstall,witha
bluntheadlikeapanther's,hugeroundeyes,aswallow'sheavy
jowls,atiger'swhiskers,athunderousvoice,andastancelikea
dashinghorse.Halfinfear,halfinadmiration,Xuandeaskedhis
name.

Tn1942,duringChina'swaragainstJapan,1happenedtobea
-solitaryAmericantravelingwithapartyofChinesefromCheng-
dutoLanzhouandbeyond.Theywereofficialsandengineersof
theNationalResourcesCommission,withasprinklingofjournal-
ists.Allwerecollegegraduates;manyhadadvanceddegreesfrom
foreignstudy.Werodetogetherintimatelyinasmallbus,andour
firstmainobjectivewasHanzhonginsouthernShaanxi.
Almostfromthestart1noticedthatmycompanionswere
havingvigorousdiscussionsthatseemedtoinvolvetheoldnames
ofvarioustownsthatourroadpassedthrough.Changingplace-
namesareoneoftheproblemsofChinesehistory,and1paidlittle
attention.Aboutthethirddaythediscussionscouldnolongerbe
ignored.Ouryoungestmember,theDagongbaocorrespondent,
excitedlyannouncedthatthewalledtownwewereapproachingwas
thesiteofZhugeLiang's"EmptyCityStratagem."'Thewholearea
wewerepassingthrough,itturnedout,hadbeenthesceneofmany
hard-foughtcampaignsduringthewarsoftheThreeKingdoms.
Yearsbefore,asaboyinChina,1hadheardvaguelyofthe
famousnovel.TravelinSichuaninthosedayswasbysedanchair.
Aboutonceanhourthebearerswouldsetusdownwhilethey
regainedstrengthatateashop.Sometimes,sittingatasmallraised
tableattherear,therewouldbeastoryteller.Tomyqueries,my
patientfatherusuallyreplied:"ProbablysomethingfromThree
Kingdoms."Also,weoccasionallysawasnatchofChineseopera.
Again,itseemedtobe"somethingfromThreeKingdoms."Butthe
teashoprestswerebrief,andmissionaryfamiliesdidnotspend
muchtimeattheChineseopera.HavingreadaboutKingArthur
andhisknightsoftheroundtable,1decidedthatThreeKingdoms
mustbesomethingofthesame:romanticmythsofamisty
never-neverlandoflongago.Itwasstartlingtofindthatforthese
menofmodernChinaitwasfactandhistory.Furthermore.these
talesofmartialvaloranddeepestloyaltyhadspecialrelevancefor
theminthattimeofforeignaggression-withChineseresistance
beingbasedontheactualareaofLiuBei'soldkingdomofShu.
Eventually,ofcourse,1readThreeKingdoms.Itwaslikedonning
aspecialpairofglasses.Ourfamily'slifewhile1wasgrowingup
inSichuanhadbeendominatedbythecataclysmicebbandflowof
localwarlordpolitics(havingthemisfortunetobebothrichand
populous,Sichuanperhapssurpassedallotherprovincesasa"war-
lordtianxia").Nowthedramaticposturingsandrighteousmani-
festoes,theunendingintriguesandsuddenchangesofalliances,the
foraysandretreatsandoccasionalbattles,eventheactualtactics
used-allhadafamiliarring.Thewholecastofplayers,itseemed,
hadabsorbedthestoriesandlessonsofThreeKingdomsandcould
notforgetthem.
Itwasnotonlythewarlordswhofoundguidanceandinspiration
inThreeKingdoms.Afterthesuccessofthecommunists'Long
March,theGuomindangspenttheyearsfrom1934to1937in
largelyfruitlesseffortstoobliteratealltracesoftheremnantsleft
behind.ItisrecordedthatthemilitaryleaderoftheoldEyuwan
basearea"wasanavidreader,thoughnotapparentlyofMarxist
books.Hisfavoriteworksincluded...TheRomanceoftheThree
Kingdoms.[This]hecarriedwithhimalways,whilefightingor
marching,andheconsulteditasamilitarymanualbetween
battles."2
TheGuomindang,too,wasnotimmune.WhenChiangKai-shek
commissionedDaiLiin1932tosetupamilitarysecretservice,he
isreportedtohaveinstructedDaitolookforanorganizational
ethosintheChinesetraditionalnovels.ThusDai'sorganization
adoptedoperationaltechniquesfromtheKGB,theGestapo,and
eventuallytheFBI,butitwasbuiltasaswornbrotherhooddevoted
tobenevolenceandrighteousnessandheldtogetherbybonds
ofmutualloyaltyandobligation-withaclearmodelinThree
Kingdoms.3
Onecouldgoon.Butperhaps1havesufficientlymadethepoint
thatThreeKingdomscontinuestohavevitalityinChineseattitudes
andbehavior.Thatfactalonemakesitimportanttousoutsiders
whoseektoknowandunderstandChina.
Thereisanotherimportantreason,moregeneralandnonutili-
tarian,whyThreeKingdomswellmeritsareading.Foratleastfour
hundredyearsithascontinuedtobeafavoriteoftheworld'slargest
public.TheliterateofChinareadandrereadit;thosewhocannot
readlearnit(perhapsevenmoreintensely)fromstorytellersand
operaandwordofmouth.Itis,simply,aterrificstory.Every
elementisthere:dramaandsuspense,valorandcowardice,loyalty
andbetrayal,powerandsubtlety,chivalryandstatecraft,the
obligationsofrulerandsubject,conflictsinthebasictiesof
brotherhoodandlineage.Byanycriterion,1suggest,itisan
importantpieceofworldliterature.
Wearefortunate,therefore,tohavethisnewcompleteand,for
thefirsttime,annotatedtranslationbyMossRoberts.Professor
Robertshasadmirablypreservedthevigorandflavorofthe
Chinesetext.Hiseruditionandpatiencehaveproducedaclarityof
languageandyetenableustoenjoythesubtletiesandwordplaysof
theoriginal.Histranslationsofthepoems,importantinthestory,
areofteninspired.
Thoughurgingthereaderon,1cannotpromisethatitwillbe
aneasyread.Thestory,admittedly,islongandcomplex.Weare
doublyfortunate,then,thatProfessorRobertshascomplemented
hisexcellenttranslation-withbackgroundinformationandthe
translatednotesandcommentarybytheeditorofthetraditional
Chineseversionofthenovel.Withthehelpofhisresearchandthe
guidanceoftheChinesecommentary,thewayisgreatlyeased.Few,
1hope,willfalterandthusfailfullytoenjoythisabsorbing,
rewarding,andmajesticnovel.

罗贯中(约1330年-约1400年),名本,字贯中,号湖海散人,山东东原人(今山东东平县)。元末明初著名小说家、戏曲家,是中国章回小说的鼻祖。 罗贯中的一生著作颇丰,主要作品有:剧本《赵太祖龙虎风云会》、《忠正孝子连环谏》、《三平章死哭蜚虎子》;小说《隋唐两朝志传》、《残唐五代史演义》、《三遂平妖传》、《粉妆楼》、代表作《三国演义》等。
