亚当·斯密（1723—1790年）。著名经济学家，西方经济学的主要创立者之一。亚当·斯密于1759年出版了第一部著作《道德情操论》，并因此确立了他在知识界的地位。此后，他于1766年开始着手《国民财富的性质和原因的研究》（简称《国富论》）的写作，1773年基本完稿，后又经3年润色。直至1776年3月出版。此书的出版不仅在英国本土产生了重大影响。而且在欧洲和美洲大陆也引起了大众的广泛讨论。因此。亚当·斯密被认为是“现代经济学之父”。
