插图：4 Matching processesAs well as extending the system networks in delicacy, an interesting corollary has been their extension in breadth. Data generated by this research has led to the recognition of a group of new Process types that require a further general category for their adequate classification. Since the purpose of producing the PTDB has been to formulate a picture of what should be modelled in the production of a representative system network, a transitivity analysis is required for each verb sense in the database. A network can then be created from this analysis, in which each verb sense has a place. Each verb sense in the list must therefore be analysed according to its Process type and its configuration Participant Roles. An example of this analysis applied to the verb senses of accept can be seen in columns 'E' and 'F' in Table 1. By approaching transitivity in this 'bottom-to-top' manner - rather than taking an existing framework and exemplifying it using lexical verbs （i.e. top-to-bottom）-one is forced to recognise the need for a further set of categories to model the language. In analysing this large number of verb senses it became clear that many of the senses did not fit the established categories.In a list of problematic Process types some of the problem verb senses involved similar semantic roles and thus formed a semantically related group. This is not surprising, as I found that items from semantically similar domains often involved the same transitivity analysis. An example of this phenomenon is the group of verb senses which I have termed the 'stopping being' group, and include the Processes 'dying', 'vanishing',expiring', 'perishing' and 'disappearing'.
