J The Dogs and the cook
A cook was preparing dinner and some dogs were lying at the
kitchen door. The cook killed a calf, and threw the insides into
the yard.
The dogs seized them, ate them up, and said.. "The cook is
good. He knows how to cook well."
After a little while the cook began to clean turnips and on-
ions, and he threw away the outsides. Thee dogs ran up to them,
turned up their noses, and said"Our cook is spoiled. He used
to make good things, but now he is worthless."
But the cook did not hear the dogs, and cooked the dinner in
his usual way. The people of the house, however, ate up the
dinner and praised it, if the dogs did not.
(Tolstoi)

22 l The Rivers and the Sea
Once upon a time the rivers combined against the sea and ac-
cused her, "Why is it that when we rivers pour our waters into
you so fresh and sweet, you straightway render them salt and un-
palatable ?" The sea, observing the temper in which they came,
merely answered, "If you do not wish to become salt, please
keep away from me altogether."
Those who are most benefited are often the first to complain.
(Aesop)
1. unpalatable [-an'peelotobl a.

23 I The Travellers and the Plane Te
A hot summer some travellers worn out by the heat of the
sun. They saw a plane tree nearby and ran to it, laid themselves
down under the tree. As~they rested under its shade, looking up
towards the tree, one said, "What a useless tree is this barren
plane!" The plane tree answered them, "Ungrateful creatures!
At the very moment that you are enjoying benefit from me you
ra at me as being good for nothing."
Ingratitude is as blind as it is base.
