Kenneth Grahame was bom in Edinburgh ln 1859.He was brought up by his grandmother in cookham Dean， Berkshir, an area that provided much of the setting for The wind in the willows． He was educated at st.Edward’s School Oxford,then he took a job with the Bank Of England in l879.
Grahame worked his way up to the postion of Secretary at the bank in 1898， meanwhile contributing sketches，essays and stories to a range of pubIications．A collection of his pIeces about a family Of five Orphans was pubIished as The G0lden Age(1895)and its sequel Dream Days (1898),the Wind in the willows (1908)was origlnaIly a series of letters and，bedtime stories for his son Aistair． it wasn't an overnight slJccess but its fame grrw slowly，particularIy after it was dramatized by A.A Milne in 1929。
Grahame stopped writing after the First World War and died in Pangbourne， Berkshire in l932．
